While passengers eagerly anticipated the coming expedition, we began our lecture series with Ken Wright’s introduction to the seabirds of the southern ocean. We learned about winged wanderers like the magnificent albatross. Watching these birds soar effortlessly about the ship, it was easy to see why the mariners of old thought them magical and in the words of Coleridge, “… the bird that made the breeze to blow.” Following Ken, Kennan and Karen Ward gave a workshop on digital photography – no doubt useful for the picturesque days to come. Just before lunch, Brad gave us an overview of our expedition and introduced us to the environmental and wildlife watching guidelines that we will observe throughout the course of our journey. After lunch, Colin Baird gave a presentation on the whales of the southern ocean. Colin’s fondness for one of these whales in particular, the orca, was difficult to disguise. Later the expedition staff told us about our destination of the next day – the Falkland Islands. Ken gave us an overview of the geography and geology as well as birdlife and Colin informed us know more about the marine mammals we may see. Ian Shaw gave a short background of the bewildering human history of the islands including some of the events leading up to the 1982 conflict between Britain and Argentina over the islands. After dinner, Kennan and Karen showed their video A Long Way From Nowhere.
